I just wanted to belatedly thank you for putting up this amazing post. My wife and I used this to get some pretty sweet seats during our honeymoon in Japan. We sprung for the business class Kodama going to Kyoto from Tokyo and it was amazing.

We bought our tickets in Osaka station, I forget where exactly, but a nice English speaking lady at the tourist information booth helped us out. She was genuinely surprised that we knew about the deal, and she said something like ” oh this is a very good deal, how did you find this?” which really made my day.

To Thymery – your best bet is the JR Rail Pass, not the Puratto Kodama. You can get a faster train (Hikari) and it’s only for those who live outside of Japan (meaning you cannot buy it in Japan). http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en001.html

I am from Singapore and plan to visit Tokyo on 16 Dec. I was looking for a cheap and fast train ticket from Tokyo To Kyoto or Osaka. So, how should I go about getting this Puratto Kodama ticket? Where can I check the timetable of the train service? I can’t read Japanese.

When you say ‘You can’t buy same-day tickets.’ do you mean I can’t get tickets that go up and return on the same day? Or you mean the first leg cannot be on the same day?

So I can grab a train from Osaka to Tokyo for about $130… that’s like $70 cheaper. $30 if you count I have to get to Osaka, but that’s still a pretty sweet deal.
