Thanks for this post. It clears some things up, but just want to notice that young people usually just use “さんかい” for “三階”, probably because they’re used to it from using “三回”

Thanks a lot for this very interesting post. I’m still far from the advanced level actually, but at least the basics are clear now… I didn’t even know there was a general rule, I have always been told that one must learn this by rote instead of trying to understand

Small typo: “さんばん” should be さんぼん (三本), I presume.

Thanks! This is incredibly useful. My previous go-to source for counters was the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_counters), but it’s rather flaky.

Looking forward to whatever it is you’re working on.
